As some of you already know, the reason I started this blog is to share my thoughts and opinions on the things I love and am passionate about whether it be fashion, beauty, travel, lifestyle or things going on in our world that I want to bring awareness and attention to. Today's post is exactly that, it is an issue that is very near to my heart and affects over 27 million people around the world. Today, February 27, 2015 is Shine A Light On Slavery Day.
I first learned about what constitutes "modern day slavery" through becoming a part of my college's chapter of the International Justice Mission (IJM) campus organization my sophomore year. (For those of you who don't know, I graduated from Auburn University!! Can I get a WAR EAGLE?!!!!) But as I was saying becoming a part of this group of students, who met throughout the semester to raise funds to go towards freeing the enslaved, to learning about the signs and severity of modern day slavery in the United States and around the world, and to spending hours praying for those enslaved in different parts of the world. We prayed for their strength, that they would live to be set free one day, we prayed that the Lord would reveal himself to them through the darkness, and that once freed, they would not harden their hearts but completely surrender them to our Creator so that he may make them new! (Making beauty from ashes!) So many people have been freed from the donations made and awareness raised by so many "freedom fighters" around the world! However, there are still 27 million people enslaved today! We have to stand up against the wickedness and sinfulness in this world! Because contrary to popular opinion slavery DID NOT end with the Civil War, for it continues EVERY minute, EVERY day. Below are some quotes and highlights on modern slavery I thought you might find interesting. I hope you check them out along with the youtube videos I have posted below! I would love to hear from any "freedom fighters" out there and/or people willing to raise awareness of modern day slavery along with me in an attempt to END IT!
Slavery has many forms and names, but it’s still slavery. And it’s still wrong.
Can you imagine being forced to work without pay, trapped, unable to walk away, subject to violence or the threat of violence, by another person as they control you? Own you? Isolated, yet hidden in plain sight. This is reality for those trapped in slavery today. In the year 2015. Slavery is illegal in every single country in the world. Yet it still exists.
